R2-D2 is made in rounds from the top of the head down, with legs
made separately. Do not join rounds unless told to, use a stitch
marker to mark the start of a round - a small piece of different
coloured yarn placed under the stitch at the start of the round will do.
To start a round, you can use the magic ring method , but I prefer
(ch2, work 6 sc into 1
st ch). If you work the 6 sc over the tail of yarn
as well you can use that to pull the hole tight.
When changing from one colour of yarn to another wo rk the sc before
the change until there are two loops left on the ho ok. Then use the
new colour for the final yarn over hook and pull th rough. Work a few
sc over the tails of the end of the old yarn and th e start of the new
yarn to secure them. If you are going to use the co lour again within a
few rounds (as happens in R2-D2's head) work the fi rst sc after the
change over the old colour then leave the yarn hang ing so you can
pick it up on the next colour change.
Work through both loops of stitches unless otherwis e indicated.

If you are using safety eyes as joints make the leg s first.

Legs (make two):
Using white yarn.
Round 1: Ch2, work 6 sc into 1
st ch - 6 sc.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sc.
Round 3 - 5: (3 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 12 sc.
Round 6: [Sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc] 2 times – 8 sc.

Insert one of the eyes on the inside of the leg wit h the shank sticking
out between rounds 2 and 3 - the decreases on round 6 will be at the
back and front of the legs.
Round 7 - 10: (4 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 8 sc.
Round 11: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 4 times – 12 sc.
Round 12: Sc in each sc around - 12 sc.
Round 13: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 4 times – 16 sc .
Round 14: Sc in each sc around - 16 sc.
Round 15: BLO [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc] 4 times – 12 sc.
Round 16: [Sc2tog] 6 times – 6 sc. FO, leaving a length of y arn.

Both legs:
Using dark blue yarn embroider a vertical blue line between the
bottom of the 3rd round and the bottom of the 10th round. To do this
sew three vertical lines then sew over these horizo ntally many times.
Stuff, not too firmly, flattening the top of the le g, then sew the hole at
the base up neatly, pulling the yarn up through the leg tightly to make
sure the base lies flat.

Body:
Start using dark blue yarn:
Round 1: Ch2, work 6 sc into 1
st ch - 6 sc.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sc.
Change to silver-grey yarn.
Round 3: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 6 times – 18 sc.
Round 4: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 6 times - 24 sc .
Round 5: Sc in each sc around - 24 sc.
Change to dark blue yarn.
Round 6 - 7: (2 rounds) sc in each sc around - 24 sc.
Change to silver-grey yarn.
Round 8: Sc in each sc around - 24 sc.

Fit eye now, between round 4 and 5, with the start of the round placed
at the back of R2-D2.
Change to white yarn.
Round 9 - 18: (10 rounds) sc in each sc around - 24 sc.

At this point use blue and grey yarn to embroider d etails on the body.
Using dark blue yarn, embroider a square around the eye, then three
horizontal lines across the front on each of the fi rst three rounds of
white. I sew one horizontal line, then go over it v ertically many times
to create a solid, thick line. Under these three li nes embroider four or
five vertical lines of silver-grey yarn over rounds 13 to 16. Sew around
the edges and across the middle of this grey patch using dark blue
yarn.
Now fix the legs in place firmly on either side of the body. Push the
shanks of the safety eyes between the 10th and 11th rounds and
secure with washers.
Stuff firmly.
Round 19: BLO [Sc2tog, sc in next sc] 8 times – 16 sc.
Round 20: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc] 4 times – 12 sc.
Round 21: [Sc2tog, sc in next sc] 4 times – 8 sc.
Round 22: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 4 times – 12 sc.
Round 23: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 4 times – 16 sc .
Round 24: Sc in each sc around - 16 sc.
Round 25: BLO [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc] 4 times – 12 sc.
Round 26: [Sc2tog] 6 times – 6 sc. FO leaving length of yarn .

Finish stuffing then sew the hole at the base up ne atly, pulling the
yarn up through the body tightly to make sure the b ase lies flat. Take
the yarn through the body a couple of times to secu re and then cut it.

*If you don't want to use safety eyes as leg joints, you can still attach
the legs with yarn so that they are 'jointed' and w ill move.
When you finish making the legs, secure the end of the yarn in one leg
and cut. With the other pass a length of yarn out t hrough the leg, two
rounds from the top on the inside.
Arrange both legs in position on either side of the body. Take the yarn
all the way through the body (between the 10th and 11th rounds) and
through the other leg (between the 2nd and 3rd roun ds). Pull tight. Go
back through the leg, the body and all the way thro ugh the top of the
first leg and pull tight again. Do this one or two more times and
secure.
