Chewbacca
Star Wars Mini Amigurumi

Materials:
25g brown variegated yarn, double knitting weight. This yarn should
preferably include a rust colour and a dark grey. I t can be a mohair
type, but wool and acrylic should be fine.
25g silver grey yarn, double knitting or 4 ply weig ht.
25g rust brown yarn, double knitting or 4 ply weigh t.
Small amount black yarn.
Stuffing.
1 pair 7.5 mm black or blue safety eyes.
Wire pet brush.
Tapestry needle.
3.5mm hook (US E hook).
Finished size: approximately 4.5” tall.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
st = stitch or stitches
sc = single crochet (US), double crochet (UK)
hdc = half double crochet (US), half treble crochet (UK)
dc = double crochet (US), treble crochet (UK)
bob = bobble (see special stitch instructions)
tog = together
sc2tog = decrease by working two sc together
FO = fasten off
Special stitch instructions:
2 dc bob: bobble stitch for belt. Work first part o f dc twice into 1 sc,
leaving 3 loops on hook, pull through all 3.
3 dc bob: bobble stitch for feet. Work first part o f dc 3 times into 1 sc,
leaving 4 loops on hook, pull through all 4.
Chewbacca is made in rounds from the top of the hea d down, with
arms made separately. (His bandolier and bag are co mpletely separate
and made in rows). Do not join rounds unless told t o, use a stitch
marker to mark the start of a round - a small piece of different
coloured yarn placed under the stitch at the start of the round will do.
To start a round, you can use the magic ring method , but I prefer
(ch2, work 6 sc into 1
st ch). If you work the 6 sc over the tail of yarn
as well you can use that to pull the hole tight.

To create his fur you will need a wire pet brush (slicker). If you use a
fluffy mohair type yarn this will fluff out the thr eads that get trapped
when you crochet, but it will also work on smooth w ool or acrylic yarn.
I would recommend that you crochet a test sample wi th the yarn you
are using and brush it to check that you like the e ffect. You need to
brush quite vigorously, in several directions, to g et the right furry
effect.

I have made a version of Chewbacca using smooth acr ylic yarn (on the
left) and an alpaca mix yarn (on the right) to show the different
effects.
Work through both loops of stitches unless otherwis e indicated.

Head and Body:
Use brown variegated yarn:
Round 1: Ch2, work 6 sc into 1
st ch - 6 sc.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sc.
Round 3: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 6 times – 18 sc.
Round 4: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc] 3 times - 21 sc .
Round 5 - 7: (3 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 21 sc.
Round 8: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc] 3 times - 24 sc .
Round 9 - 20: (12 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 24 sc.

Fit the eyes at this point. They should go between rounds 7 and 8
(with the start of the round placed at the back of Chewbacca), but the
yarn needs to be brushed before they are fitted, or you will scratch

them. Since you will not be able to see the rounds once the yarn is
brushed, mark the correct place with a bit of contr asting yarn, or use
your fingernails to feel the rounds afterwards. Bru sh away from the
face area and over the top of Chewbacca's head. Fit the eyes, then
stuff the head and use the black yarn to embroider a nose (4 lines of
yarn) and mouth (2 lines of yarn).
Round 21: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc] 3 times - 27 sc .
Round 22 - 24: (3 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 27 sc.
Round 25: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc] 3 times - 30 sc .
Round 26 - 27: (2 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 30 sc.
Round 28: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc] 3 times - 33 sc .
Round 29 - 30: (2 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 33 sc.
Round 31: To make feet: Find the stitch in the previous roun d that is
in the front middle of Chewbacca. Then count back 6 stitches before
that (not including the middle stitch) and mark thi s stitch. Sc in each
sc around until you get to the marked stitch. Make feet: 3dc bob in
next 4 sc, sc in next 5 sc, 3dc bob in next 4 sc. S c in each sc around to
the end of the round – 33 st.
Make sure the bobbles that make up the feet are pus hed outwards.

Stuff head and top half of body firmly, stuff sligh tly less firmly below
the waist.
Round 32: [Work 2 stitches together, sc in next 9 st] 3 time s – 30 sc.
Round 33: [Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc] 6 times – 24 sc.
Round 34: [Sc2tog] 6 times – 12 sc.
Round 35: [Sc2tog] 6 times – 6 sc. FO, leaving a piece of ya rn at
least 24” long.
Sew the hole at the base up neatly then brush the r est of the body a
little, but not so much that you can't see the roun ds. Pull the yarn out
at the middle front of Chewbacca, 7 rounds up from his feet. Pull the
yarn up tightly to make sure the base lies flat. To define the legs pass
the yarn through the body to the same position at t he middle back and
pull tightly. Pull the yarn back through to the fro nt, one round lower,
and again pull tightly. Continue to do this, workin g down the legs
round by round, until you reach the base of the fig ure. Take the yarn
through the base (not tightly) a couple of times to secure and then cut
it. Finish brushing Chewbacca so he is nice and fur ry, ending up by
brushing downwards. You may need to trim the fur on his feet.

Arms (make 2):
Use brown variegated yarn.
Round 1: Ch2, work 6 sc into 1
st ch - 6 sc.
Round 2: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 2 times – 8 sc.
Round 3: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc] 2 times – 10 sc .
Round 4 - 10: (7 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 10 sc.
Round 11: [Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc] 2 times – 8 sc.
Round 12 - 14: (3 rounds) Sc in each sc around - 8 sc.
Round 15: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc] 2 times – 6 sc. FO leavi ng a
length of yarn.
Stuff lightly and sew the hole at the top of each a rm shut. Brush both
arms until furry then sew them to the body.

Bag:
Use rust brown yarn.
Leaving a length of yarn at the start, ch 7.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 ch, ch 1, tur n – 6 sc.
Row 2 - 13: Sc in next 6 sc, ch 1, turn – 6 sc.
Row 14: Sc in next 6 sc – 6 sc.
FO, leaving a length of yarn about 40" long.
Fold the top over leaving the bottom 4 rows as the flap. Sew the edges
of the bag together using the length of yarn, and u se the length of
yarn from the start to sew the flap shut.

Bandolier/Strap:
Use silver grey yarn.
Ch 28.
Sc in 2nd ch from hook, [2dc bob in next ch, hdc in next ch] 12 times,
2dc bob in next ch, sc in next ch – 27 st.
FO and weave in both ends of yarn.
Secure the length of brown yarn from the bag to the end of the strap -
the outside of the strap is the bumpy side. Thread the yarn through
the strap, under the 2dc bob and over the hdc, and join into the other
side of the bag. Do this 4 times, back and forth, t hen do it once the
other way, over the 2dc bob and under the hdc. Secu re the end of the
yarn and cut. Now you just need to put it on Chewba cca and he'll be
fully dressed!
