TO MAKE UP
Join body seam, leaving base and neck
edges open, then work a gathering thread
through every stitch on base edge, draw up
tightly and fasten off. Stuff body firmly
through open neck edge. The body seam
will run along centre back.
Take head piece and join muzzle seam from
neck edge up to marker threads, then
remove markers. Now sew head gusset
into top of head, matching end of muzzle
seam to centre of gusset nose edge.
Count 20 knitted rows up from nose edge
of gusset and mark eye positions with pins
on each side section of head, placing just
outside gusset seam. At each point push
eye shank through knitting from right side
to wrong, then fix with locking washer at
wrong side, pushing it down shank as far as
it will go.
Stuff head firmly, then sew neck edges of
head and body together, matching muzzle
seam to last decrease stitch on right side of
neck so that head faces slightly to the right.
Fold each front leg in half and join across
base edge, then up side edges, matching
point on one side to marker thread on
other and leaving top open. Remove
markers and stuff legs firmly then pin in
position on body, placing top edge of each
leg opening 10cm down from neck edge
and base edges of openings 4cm apart at
centre front of body and adjusting until dog
sits upright. Sew in place, adding more
stuffing to leg tops if necessary.
Join side edges of each back leg piece down
from gathered front edge, leaving a 2cm
space open at back. Use tweezers to stuff
firmly, then join remainder of seam. Work
a gathering thread through every stitch on
back edge, draw up tightly and fasten off.
Fold each haunch piece in half and join
across top edge, then down side edges,
stopping at marker threads. Remove
markers and stuff haunches firmly. With
haunch seam facing towards front, fit
opening over back of leg so that base edge
of opening is in line with gathered back
edge of leg, then sew in place. Position
haunches to each side of body back,
adjusting so that legs lay flat and dog sits
correctly, then sew in place.
Join side edges of tail from gathered tip
down to base edge of opening, drawing up
yarn slightly to make seam curve. Use
tweezers to stuff tail firmly, then position
and sew opening to back of body so that
tail curves round right back leg.
Fold each ear in half and join across top
edge, then join side edges down to marker
threads. Remove markers, then oversew
lower edges together down to and across
base edge. Position and sew oversewn
edges of ears to head in line with gusset
seams, placing base edge of each ear 10
knitted stitches up from neck edge. Fold
down ears as in photograph and catch front
edge of each ear to head with a few
stitches.
Take a length of Black yarn and draw out a
single strand. Fastening off ends at nose
point, use the remaining 2 strands of yarn
to embroider mouth with.three straight
stitches, first working a 3cm vertical stitch
down muzzle seam, then a 5cm horizontal
stitch at each side to form an inverted Y
shape. Position and sew nose piece in
place, stuffing lightly with a little Black yarn.
Using a length of Oatmeal yarn, fasten off
on gusset seam, 2cm above one eye. Take
needle under knitting and draw out close
to top of eye. Take a tiny stitch and return
needle, again under knitting, to starting
point. Draw up stitch gently to form brow
tuck, then fasten off yarn and darn end into
head. Form brow above opposite eye in
same manner.
Use brown pencil to shade knitting round
nose and top of mouth, and to shade round
eyes.

Take a length of Walnut yarn and draw out
a single strand. Use the remaining 2 strands
to embroider three vertical, 2cm long,
straight stitches on each paw, then work
over these stitches once more before
sewing yarn ends into paw stuffing.
Join slipper sole and insole pieces
together, leaving an 8cm space on one side
open. Trace off sole pattern and cut from
card. Slip card inside knitted pieces to
stiffen and join remainder of seam. Sew
base edge of slipper upper round edge of
sole with backstitch, then position and sew
V-shaped back edge of slipper directly
behind embroidered lines of mouth.
